Conservative Party (CP) presidential candidate Elton Joseph Mabirizi has warned of decisive action if the government attempts to rig the forthcoming elections, raising concerns over the integrity of recently imported electoral equipment.
Mabirizi also urged voters to prepare for potential internet and social media shutdowns during the election period.
Addressing residents of Kiruuli Village in Nakaseke District, Mabirizi said his party had already written to the Electoral Commission, expressing dissatisfaction with the security of the electoral equipment, which he claims may have been compromised.
He noted that the Commission chairperson, being a presidential appointee, cannot be fully held accountable.
“Some of it may already be compromised, and it is hard to pin the Chairperson because he is appointed by the President,” he said.
Mabirizi advised voters to acquire small analogue phones to maintain communication in case of internet or social media blackouts.
He urged residents to trust him with the presidency, asserting that he is best positioned to fight corruption decisively.
On governance, Mabirizi pledged to reduce the number of Members of Parliament, saying the current figure of over 500 is unsustainable and costly.
“We need to reduce MPs and use that money to improve schools, hospitals, among others,” he said.
He also criticised persistent land grabbing and underdevelopment in the greater Luweero region, describing it as the “NRM’s Mecca.”
“Luweero still has poor roads, yet you fought to bring this government into power. NRM is very ungrateful; you need to see change,” he told the crowd.
Mabirizi continues his campaign trail in the greater Luweero region as Uganda approaches election day.
